Cleaner Gold

OK, a good news headline to balance all the bad news in the previous post.

Jewelry retailers are, for the first time, opposing a specific planned mine for environmental reasons. I read about the plans for this mine in Sea Kayaker magazine, and mining in the area really does sound like a bad plan. Just putting the roads in for the mine would have caused damage to a sensitive environment, not to mention all the mining waste.

But according to this LA Times article (via TreeHugger), several major jewelry retailers have decided that the sockeye salmon run in the Bristol Bay is more important than the gold and copper that could be mined there. Will this statement from the jewelers be enough to stop the mine?
